SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF PATTERN GENERALISATION: CASE STUDY OF OPERATIONAL CONCRET STUDENT’S
Last modified: 2017-07-20
Abstract
The pattern generalization activity is one of the pedagogical approaches to introducing algebra. The introduction of algebra through the pattern generalization activity is very effective in helping students learn algebra meaningfully and directionally since the initial phase. The purpose of this research is to analyze the pattern generalization process based on semiotic perspective. The semiotic components to be studied include three signs, namely; gestures, speech and writing. In addition, also the interaction among signs that appear will be examined. This descriptive qualitative research involved the subject of a one seventh grader at the stage of operational concrete. Data collection is done by giving the task of pattern generalization (TGP) by think aloud and unstructured interview. Furthermore, the data are analyzed by categorization of gestures, speeches and writings based on the process stages of the generalization of predefined patterns which include; (a) identify and develop the regularity, (b) try repeatedly and confirm the regularity, (c) make a general form and (d) test prove the general form that had been produced
