Abstract

This research aims to describe the profile of  the understanding layers of the function’s derivative concept of the students prospective mathematic teachers. The subject has been selected by each of the female and male students who have studied the concept of a function derivative.. The understanding layers were based on the Pirie-Kieren modified model, which hypothesizes that there are eight understanding layers, that is primitive knowing, image making, image having, property noticing, formalizing, observing, structuring, and inventising. Supposedly, a professional teacher must meet the eight layers of understanding. Interview transcript data and respondent’s worksheets have been analyzed qualitatively, interpreted and summarized. The results of this research indicated that the subject meets the indicators, ranging from "doing the initial effort in understanding the definition of the derivatived function" on the first layer, up to "having a complete structured understanding". This is one of the eighth layer indicators. This have shown that the subject almost meets the inventizing layer, we have called inventizingoid. This understanding layer model is expected to be an assessment instrument for the recruitment process of math teacher candidates.
