Abstract

This paper is study on  proceptual thinking process Junior High School student in solving mathematical problems on the topic the gradient of a straight line equation. Thinking proseptual (Tall, 1994) is as the ability to manipulate the symbolism flexibly as process or concept, freely interchanging different symbolisms for the same object. This study is a qualitative research method is interview-based data collection tasks. Interviews were conducted based on the stage of the Polya problem solving process (understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan and look back). The proceptual thinking  happen if students in the solving problem already at the three phases stage of procept (procedure, process and  procept). As for the symbol considered is the visual symbol (graph) and verbally. The results showed that the subject of research in the mathematical process already at the stage of procept. The subjects are very flexible manipulate both visual symbols to verbal or otherwise.
