Abstract

One of the basic competencies that must be owned by high school students related to statistics is students are able to read, present data in the tables, bar charts, and diagrams (lines, circles), and ogive; and interpret those data. This advocates that understanding the data is important for students who are expected to eventually contribute to their future career. The fact that quantitative information exists in every joint of life which requires students to be able to react intelligently to quantifiable information globally. The purpose of this study is to describe how high school students in presenting, reading and interpreting data that are part of statistical literacy. This research is a descriptive explorative qualitative. The subjects of this study are students of SMA Negeri 3 Sidoarjo, which consists of one male student and one female student who has a high level of mathematical ability. Data collection is achieved through job-based interviews. Data analysis is completed by data reduction, presentation, verification and inference. Validation of data is done through repetitive checking with different time. The results indicated that the male subjects who has high mathematical abilities were able to present data in various forms of data presentation such as line diagrams, bar charts, pie charts, and single data tables, but the characteristics of the data were not considered. This is slightly different on the female perspective, which in addition is able to present data in various forms, furthermore taking into the characteristics of the data (continue or discrete). As for reading the data, male and female subjects elaborate their understanding through the title of graph / diagram and description (in each axis). Subjects extracting information, interpreting and explaining the points in the graph based on what appears obviously. In interpreting the data, the female subject takes into account the general pattern of data fluctuations and uses general data trends to predict the likelihood of future data and determine the value of increase or decrease of data based on its average value. As for the male subject in estimating the rise or decrease of future data, tend to use the value of data mode.
