Abstract

This study aims to describe the problem solving of MTs mathematics students with cognitive field independent (FI) and field dependent (FD) based on Polya problem solving stage. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects consisted of 2 VIII students of MTs each cognitive style FI and FD with equal mathematical ability and male gender. Research data were obtained by assignment and interview. The results showed that FI students were able to correctly answer all mathematical problems given, while FD students were able to answer some. Based on the Polya problem solving stage, FI and FD students in understanding the problem: reading the problem in a low voice, making illustrations the given problem, expressing the problem in their own words, writing down the known and asked questions, in planning the solution: FI students makes a problem solving plan whereas FD students do not, in implementing the plan: the students implement the problem solving plan that has been made while the FD students are not, and in re-examining the FI and FD students: check the correctness of the problem solving steps that have been done, back the truth of the outcome of the problem that has been obtained.
