Abstract

This study investigated students' reasoning in generalizing patterns in solving problem of cognitive styles. The research aim is to describe how students are deployed during completing the task of pattern generalization. Two students with high mathematical abilities and different cognitive styles of Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD)  were selected as subjects for test and interview sessions. The problem used is the numbers pattern, pictorial patterns and patterns on the contextual problem. The results showed that students with FI cognitive styles in solving mathematical problems were more analytical and not easily influenced by the manipulation of the surrounding situation compared to cognitive-style FD students.
