PRESERVICE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ CONCEPTION ABOUT QUADRILATERAL AND TRIANGLE

Abstract: Preservice Primary School Teachers’ Conception About Quadrilateral And Triangle. This research is descriptive quantitative design. The research aims to described the preservice primary school teachers’ conception about quadrilateral and triangle. The particapant of this research was 177 first year students in 2016/2017 of primary school teacher education program in Mulawarman University. The participants were administered a questionnaire that consisted of 13 questions extracted from studies on the descriptions and image of quadrilateral and triangle, identification of quadrilateral and triangle families, and identification and classification of the relationships between quadrilateral and between triangle. The results showed that conception of participants were only at the first level of analysis. The participants did not use the hierarchical definations of quadrilateral and triangle and prototypical were dominant in their personal figural concepts. The participants were not able to establish relationships among quadrilateral and among triangle due to the effect of prototypical image in choosing a family category among the given images. This study concluded that although the participants possessed formal definations of quadrilateral and triangle, their prototypical images affected their figural concepts
