Abstract

Representation is a supporting tool of mathematical understanding in mathematics word problem solving. This research was descriptive qualitative, which aimed to examine student representation in mathematics word problem solving based on self-efficacy. The research subjects are two students of eighth grade in MTs Negeri 2 Surabaya with equal mathematics ability consist of student are a women with high self-efficacy and a women with low self-efficacy. Selection of study subject according to the results of test of mathematical ability, documentation of the result of middle test even semester 2016/2017, and results of Questionnaire of mathematics word problem self-efficacy scale. Selected students are asked to mathematics word problem solving and be interviewed. High self-efficacy students tend to use multiple representations of sketches and formulas or mathematical models whereas low self-efficacy students tend to use a form of representation of sketches or mathematical models only in mathematics word problem solving at devising a plan and carrying out the plan in the Polya problem solving. This study emphasizes that teachers should notice student representation as a consideration of designing innovative learning to increase self-efficacy of each student to achieve maximum mathematical achievement, but still require adjustment to the situation and conditions in school.
