Package delivery case: Mathematical literacy of mathematics education students based on the sex differences

Abstract


Many problem in daily life involved mathematics that not easy to be categorized explicitly as specific mathematics topic such as expedition case. In package delivery case, the competences and skills on geometry, algebra, numbers, change and relationship, data handling, reasoning and communication may be involved. Therefore, mathematical literacy, the ability to know and to use basic mathematics in daily life, should be possessed by everyone as well as by the students of mathematics education. They have to teach this knowledge to their students in the future. This paper aims to describe to what extent the third year of mathematics education students can be considered as mathematically literate. Data collected by mathematical literacy test for mathematics education students from two universities in East Java, Indonesia. There were 62 students’ of mathematics education who sit at least on 6th semester joined the test.  Students’ written responses are collected, organized based on sex differences, and analyzed to determine their skill and characteristic on mathematical literacy. Their mathematical literacy are categorized into three level of mathematical literacy. The examples of interesting students’ respons  altogether with the scoring are discussed to describe how are their responses based on the sex differences
