Abstract

This article describes students understanding who have of Field Dependent (FD) and Field Independent (FI) cognitive style in solving statistical problems with onto-semiotics approach. Explorative descriptive research was undertaken involving 30 students of Senior High School. Data were obtained through a task-based interviews. This result of this study indicate that There are differences in understanding of FI and FD students in solving mathematical problems Using the semiotic approach to language-based aspects, Concepts and procedures. While the students' understanding of FI and FD based on the same aspect of computing, proposition and argument. FI students in solving statistical problems tend to use these terms and mathematical symbols consistently, More analytical and unaffected by the given problem and using the correct completion steps. FD students tend to use mocking terms and symbols , Tend not to be able to explain the related elements of the concept used in solving statistical problems And there tends to be some of the correct completion steps. It is recommended that a special treatment for FD students be discussed with peers related to the concept that has been studied so as to solve the problem given . For FI students are given more complex problems that can be used as peer tutors for FD students.
