Abstract

Algebra is one of the components in mathematics that students learn at school. Researchers have conducted many studies on the algebraic abilities of Indonesian students and found that Indonesian students’ algebraic ability was still relatively low. On the other hand, some researches also show that algebraic ability in elementary school of Thailand students’ is relatively good, therefore, it is necessary to conduct the same research in the Thailand’s Junior High School students in order to know the algebraic ability at higher school level. This research aims to describe students algebraic thinking ability in solving Olympiad exponential problem at Junior High School level and to motivate Indonesian teachers and students to improve their mathematic skill, especially in algebra. The subject of this study consists of 2 students with excellent mathematic skill, 2 students with average mathematic skill and 2 students with low mathematics skill from class Matthayom 2/3 in Thailand. Students with excellent mathematical skill were able to solve algebraic problems correctly by using different methods. Students with average mathematical skill were able to find a method to solve the algebraic problem but could not finish solving the problem. Students with low mathematical skill were not able to solve the algebraic problem. Based on the results of this research, Indonesian teachers are expected to improve their learning methods so that students can compete with other countries.
