Abstract

Collaborative learning is believed have a number of advantages in developing students' collaboration skills, but it doesn't mean this learning has no limitations. Scholar found the types of tasks that used must be able to encourage students to collaborate. Hence, this research aims to examine the effect of implementation challenging task on collaborative learning toward students’ collaboration skills in mathematics instruction. The population of this research were all the eighth-grade students in a junior high school in Pontianak. Then randomly selected two classes as the samples. One class as the experimental group was taught using collaborative learning model with challenging task, while another class as the control group was taught using collaborative learning model without challenging task. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaire and observation to measure students collaboration skills. The findings of this research can be stated as there were significant differences in improvement students' collaboration skills between experimental group and control group with effect size more than 0.8 (large effect). Furthermore, this study conclude that collaborative learning with challenging task more effective than the collaborative learning in terms of students’ collaboration skills.
