Abstract
Student’s communication and mathematical ability are synergized each other. Both of them play an important role when students solve any problem. So that, students with high communication and mathematics ability tend to solve a problem well. Self efficacy also has an influence in solving problems, students who have high self efficacy tend to be better at solving problems than low self efficacy.
Â
This study aims to identify student’s mathematical communication ability in solving mathematical problems based on different level of self efficacy. This study is a qualitative research, involving two junior high school students as research subjects. Both of them have the same mathematics skill. However, one student has high self efficacy level and the other student has low self efficacy level. Data were collected by giving geometry problem task and task-based interview.
Â
The result shows that student with high level of self efficacy could correctly identify about the information that the side length of the large square is also the diameter length of the circle, correctly identified the question asked is the shaded area, interpreted the area into the formula of a semi-circle area minus small square area, divided the shaded area into four parts, the required information is the length of the circle radius and the length of the small square side, made a sketch or auxiliary lines to make it easier to be solved, presented steps with his own language, and explained the solution steps that are found and think about the truth of the solution.
Â
On the other hand, student with low level of self efficacy could not correctly identify about the information. Nevertheless, she could identify correctly about the question asked. She could not interpret into the formula of a semi-circle area minus small square area, but she divided the haded area into four parts. She did not make a sketch or auxiliary lines, could present steps using their own language, could not explain the solution steps, and did not think about the truth of the solution.
Â
According to the result, the conclusion shows that there are similarities and differences which has shown by students with high and low level of self efficacy. Student with high level of self efficacy tends to perform better in accomplishing indicators of mathematical communication ability when solving the given problem. Based on the condition, students need to be trained to solve problems and communicate their performance.
