Abstract

Mathematical communication is activity for someone to express an idea, concept, mathematical ideas both orally and in writing in the form of symbols, images, data, graphics, or tables with other people. Mathematical communication skills also receive special attention on education in Indonesia. Because there are many students have difficulty communicating mathematical ideas. This study aims to describe the students’ mathematical communication ability based on gender difference. Assessment of students' mathematical communication ability using open-ended tasks. This research was descriptive research with qualitative approach. The subjects in this research were four students of junior high school, there were 2 male and 2 female. Data collection methods in this study are test and interview. Data analysis techniques in this study through three stages, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data display, and (3) conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that there are differences in mathematical communication of the four subjects. The differences are found in how to express their ideas and explain their problem solving strategies.
