Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between college students’ critical thinking skills and creativity. In April 2019, seventy students who were enrolled in a Plant Taxonomy class were invited to participate in this study. The participants came from the Department of Biology Education of STKIP PGRI West Sumatra, Indonesia. A correlational design was employed and data were obtained using a 10-item essay test which consisted of 5 questions on critical thinking and 5 questions on creativity. The students’ skills to apply, evaluate, use data to develop critical insights, analyze, and synthesize information were evaluated and the students’ curiosity, fluency, originality, elaboration, and flexibility were assessed. The data were analyzed using correlation and regression analyses. The results showed that the correlation between critical thinking skills and creativity was strong (0.649) and linear (0.599). Therefore, the planned and sustainable empowerment of student critical thinking skills and creativity need to be accommodated in the classroom.
