Abstract

Disequilibrium needs to be overcome so that one's knowledge increases. Disequilibrium occurs when someone obtains information that is not in accordance with what he/she knows. When the schema owned does not match the information obtained, a person will experience disequilibrium. Someone who has a schema that a parallelogram is an example of a trapezoid experiences disequilibrium when getting information that a parallelogram is not an example of a trapezoid. Disequilibrium also occurs when constructing relationship inter-quadrangles. It is because someone experiences confusion in deciding whether there is a relationship between parallelogram and trapezoid or not. Overcoming the disequilibrium condition that occurs can be done through assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation and accommodation are complementary processes in overcoming a disequilibrium condition that occurs.

This research was a qualitative research which aimed at describing the process of overcoming the disequilibrium of prospective teachers in making relationship inter-quadrangles. The research subjects were mathematics prospective teachers who experienced disequilibrium in making relationship inter-quadrangles and could overcome disequilibrium that occured by assimilation and accommodation so that it could  make relationship inter-quadrangles.  Selection of research subjects used purposive sampling technique.  The research subjects were selected from 29 prospective teachers who were given questions and interviewed. Then, one prospective teacher who experienced disequilibrium in making relationship inter-quadrangles and could overcome disequilibrium that occurred with assimilation and accommodation so as to make the relationship inter-quadrangles was chosen as the research subject.

Based on the results of the research that had been obtained and the data analysis that had been carried out, it was revealed that subject had a schema about the definition of square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezoid, and kite. Based on the schema that had been owned, subject could reveal the definition of quadrangle. The quadrangle definitions presented by subject were analytic definitions because they contained genus proximum and differensia spesifika.

The relationship inter-quadrangles made by the subject were based on the schema about the definition of quadrangle, especially the aspect of genus proximum. In this case, subject did assimilation by integrating the information obtained that was making relationship inter-quadrangles and the schema owned, namely the definition of quadrangle. The result of the assimilation carried out was that subject could conclude that square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezoid, and kite were related to aspect of genus proximum, namely quadrangle. In other words, the relationship among square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezoid and kite was quadrangle.

Subject experienced disequilibrium when asked to make another relationship from a quadrangle.  This forced subject to change the schema he had about relationship inter-quadrangles  through accommodation. If the previous relationship inter-quadrangle was made based on any aspect of genus proximum in every quadrangle definition, then subject changed the schema by making the relationship inter-quadrangles and linking the aspect  of differensia spesifika in quadrangle. Assimilation and accommodation conducted by subject when making a relationship inter-quadrangle was able to overcome the disequilibrium condition that occured so that subject could make a relationship inter-quadrangle. Through assimilation subject could use the existing schema to respond to information obtained, while through the formation of the new schema in accommodation subject could respond to the information that was not appropriate or not available in the previous schema. Assimilation and accommodation are complementary processes in overcoming disequilibrium conditions that occur. Through assimilation and accommodation, subject gained new knowledge about the relationship inter-quadrangle.
