Abstract

Student should be understood about representation because it was one of fifth standard of school mathematics. Representation has an important role in mathematic. Representation helped student to makes mathematics’ idea more concrete. Representation was needed in problem solving. Numerical, model, number line and verbal were kind of representation on fraction. Fraction was one of the subject materials on seventh grade. Fraction was important in algebraic and other topic. Student should be mastered fraction.

The aims of this research to describe students’ ability created representation type (number line and model) on addition and subtraction operation in fraction. This research was held in SMPN 1 Munjungan. The research subject was 7-Bth from eight 7th grades. The subjects were given multiple representation tests. The research subjects were chosen three students purposively. Only three students were involved in interview to investigate their answer.

According to research result, it showed that student’s still has difficulties in representation type (number line and model) on addition and subtraction in fraction. Addition on number line, it found there were student confused to divide number line in equal units. There was student not show the result by showed the arrows well. Subtraction on number line, it found there were student confused about the arrows direction to show operation and result. Addition on model, it found that student was good enough to solve the question. Subtraction on model, it found that student confused to determine the result. Student should divide the picture or figure become equal unit/ part that showed the denominator.

Students fail in representation number line and model. Error in representation on addition and subtraction in fraction show that student did not understand fraction concept well. Student ability on multiple representation should be conducted through exercise continually.
