Abstract

Relational understanding is the ability to apply knowledge and competencies that are owned and connect them with new knowledge in solving mathematical problems and the ability to identify relationships between different topics.  This research aims to describe the relational understanding of vocational high school students in grade X in solving mathematical problems. Data was collected by giving mathematical problems, interview and audio recording.  The research result showed there is some student that : (1) at the stage of understanding the problem, both students can write and explain the problem and find out the reasons for its use. (2) at the stage of preparing the plan, both students can know, choose and use a strategy that can be used to solve the problem given and know the reasons for using the strategy, but one subject has not been able to plan properly so that it will have the next stage. (3) At the stage of implementing the plan, both students can recognize the relevance of the material with the problem given, able to use property, symbols, formulas or rules related to the problem given, students can explain problems and rules in solving problems, one subject can solve the problem correctly but one subject has not been able to solve the problem correctly (4) at the stage of looking back, students can check the truth of the results of the problem given and produce the correct answer. However, one subject knows that solving the problem produced is not in accordance with what is desired.
