Last modified: 2019-07-10
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of quantitative reasoning that students had in problem solving process. The method of this research was exploratory research with a qualitative approach. This study involved 125 junior high school students of grade VIII; students having moderate math skill were selected as subjects in the study. The data were collected through assignment tests, and task-based interviews. The results of this study indicated that, there were three characteristics of students' quantitative reasoning in solving problems, namely (1) subjects connected then generalized called relational transitions; (2) subjects linked in the form of verbal words called relational verbal transitions ; and (3) functional thinking by making symbolic generalization. The characteristics resulted can be used as the basis for developing students' thinking to learn algebra
