ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to describe the process of combinatory thinking of Senior High School students who have impulsive and reflective cognitive style in solving combinatory problem. Combinatory thinking is the way of thinking by combining the related items with the problem and theory to construct and to implement the strategy logically and systematically until it gets the solution. The process of combinatory thinking here shows that it identifies the problem, the aspect of connection between information and theory, aspect of constructing strategy, the aspect of implementing the strategy logically and systematically. The subject of the research is the students in eleventh grade based on test of MFFT (The Matching Familiar Figures Test), to determine the cognitive style owned by the students called impulsive and reflective and the research subjects who are communicative. The data collection is done by giving combinatory problem and they are asked to identify so the identifying the combinatory thinking is seen by conducting interview. The validity is time validity. The data analysis uses data reduction, data representation, and conclusion. The findings show that the students with impulsive type are different from the students with reflective style seen from the way of constructing strategy. The students with impulsive type construct two strategies namely multiplication principal and patterns, while the students with reflective type construct one strategy namely multiplication principal. With this research, the teacher can get the image of the students’ way of combinatory thinking with impulsive and reflective type so that the teacher can train and enhance the students with the same combinatory thinking in the learning process.
