Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the flexibility of students with guardian and artisan personality types in solving fraction problems. This research is a descriptive study using a qualitative approach. The subjects consisted of two 8th grade students who were selected based on  PCT (Personality Classification Test) and MAT (Mathematics Ability Test). Data collection methods used in this study were written tests and task-based interviews. After the data were collected, the they were analyzed through three stages, namely, data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that students with guardian personality type use only one strategy in solving fraction problems, namely the concept of addition and fraction multiplication and the solutions obtained are incorrect. Students with artisan personality type use two different strategies in solving fraction problems, namely drawing a picture and use variables, and the answers using both strategies are all true. Thus, it could be concluded that students with guardian personality type is more flexible that students with artisan personality type in solving fraction problems. This research can be used as a guideline in the future assessment of flexibility of students with guardian and artisan personality types.
