The Dynamics of Science Literacy Ability of Biology Students in Histology Lectures Using Worksheets Based Science Literacy

Abstract

 

Science literacy skills are very important for students, because it relate to how students understand the environment and various problems in life. The purpose of this research was to study the dynamics of scientific literacy in biology students at Histology lectures. This research method was descriptive with a quantitative approach based on test results. Instrument of science literacy assessment used essay questions that refer to indicators according with Gormally (2012), in this study limited to inquiry abilities and review information from journal articles. The results showed that scientific literacy skills in aspects of inquiry before being trained using worksheet based science literacy were resulted in the ability to formulate problems  of 50%; ability to make a research design of 50%; ability to analyze data of 37.5%; ability to answer questions of 37.5%; ability to make conclusions of 40%. On the aspect of the ability to study information from journal articles of 30%. Student literacy skills after practicing using Student Worksheets were obtained: the ability to formulate problems of 90%; ability to make research designs of 100%, ability to analyze data of 80%, ability to answer questions of 70%, ability to make conclusions of 90%. In the aspect of conducting information review of journal articles by 80%. The conclusion of the research was that scientific literacy ability has increased and achieved classical completeness in all aspects. Key word: science literacy, biology student, histology lectures
