Abstract

The Pandemic of Covid-19 since the beginning of 2020 affects all aspects of life, including education. This pandemic encourages instructors and learners to engage each other using online learning instead of face-to-face learning, as an effort to reduce the spreading of the virus. Both of them have to adapt to this more-workable learning mode. This research aimed to evaluate the adaptability of pre-service biology teachers to the online learning of the Animal Systematic Course. This was a one-shoot case study involving three classes of Animal Systematic Course with 85 pre-service biology teachers in total. The online learning was conducted by using Google Classroom for seven meetings. The adaptability was evaluated based on activity observation, assignment analyses, and students’ responses, which is acquired through an online questionnaire. The results revealed that the vast majority of pre-service of biology teachers (about 75.5%) had no prior experiences using Google Classroom and most of them got difficulties in the first online meeting. However, by the time, they can learn how to deal with the online class and almost all of them (95.3%) stated that they had been familiar with the online class. As a consequence, their participation in online classes tended to increase. The assignment analyses showed that they can complete the task well and the done-late rate decreased significantly. In addition, the pre-service biology teachers were able to take some learned-lessons from this online learning during the pandemic. This good adaptability of pre-service biology teachers can give the positive impact on their future career.
