Abstract

Since the end of 2019, we have been battling with the Pandemic of Covid-19. One of the efforts to reduce the spreading of SARS-CoV-2 infection that caused this pandemic is physical distancing. As a consequence, the learning should be conducted by online learning. This affected all education levels in Indonesia, including junior high school.
This research aimed to describe the online classes carried out by science junior high school teachers in Indonesia during the Covid-19 Pandemic as well as describe the teacher’s perspective of online learning. This study involved 81 science teachers as respondents. The teachers came from state schools (69%) and private schools (31%), from several regions of Indonesia. The teacher responses were collected through an online questionnaire using Google Form during 24-25 April 2020. The data were analyzed descriptive-quantitatively.
The results indicated that almost all science teachers (98%) attempted to deliver the lessons to the students by online learning, although most of them do not have prior experiences in managing online classes. More than half of them using the familiar social media, namely WhatsApp Group (58%); meanwhile some of them (37%) using Google Classroom, the free Learning Management System provided by Google. The online classes used for various activities, for instance presenting the materials, discussions, uploading the course materials, task assignments, as well as evaluation. Some of science teachers (30%) also attempted to conduct the practical work by using a virtual laboratory and provide simple guidance to enable the students to do at home. In addition, the finding also revealed that the teachers were enthusiastic to manage the online class during this pandemic because it encouraged them to be more creative and learn several methods related to online learning. It can be concluded that science teachers of Junior High Schools in Indonesia had positive a perspective on the online learning implementation during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
