Abstract

Development and research on dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) by utilizing plant parts is widely reported by researchers. Parts of this plant include roots, stems, twigs, leaves, flowers, and fruits. These materials are synthesized to be fabricated into photosensitizer which is a material that has the role of converting sunlight into electrical energy. This photosensitizer is a natural pigment. In this paper the types of natural pigments and DSSC performance parameters are compiled, summarized and compared to find a physical aspect that has not been studied. A systematic review approach method is used in this study. To date the highest efficiency of DSSC that has been fabricated by researchers is around 8%. The potential for developing DSSC based on organic natural materials is huge. A trend of DSSC development in the world will be also reported. The literature is investigated mainly using Scopus as well as the Google search engine. The types of pigments available for sensitizer will be also tabulated. In the five last years, we have fabricated DSSC using Musa Acuminata bracts and reported in the previously published papers. The results of the analysis of the extracted chemical compounds were also compiled. The physical properties of some natural compounds will be also presented.
