Abstract

Problem solving is one of the important aspects in mathematics learning. One of the factors that influence success in problem solving is metacognition. Metacognition is the awareness of students in using their mind to plan, monitor, and evaluate the cognitive processes and strategies that have been used. When thinking, humans do the activity of thinking in a different way. Different thinking activities are called cognitive styles. Cognitive styles that are appropriate for problem solving are adaptive and innovative. This research is a descriptive qualitative. Students are given a cognitive style questionnaire to get students who have a cognitive style of adaption and innovation. Then, the logarithmic task is given to find out the students’ metacognition in solving logarithmic problems. Research subjects were two 10th grade students consisting of one student having an adaptive and one student having an innovative. The results showed that the subject’s metacognition having an adaptive can be seen when solving logarithmic task. Metacognition at the planning stage by the subject is the subject planning to read to understand the problem, use the knowledge he has to solve, have a plan to directly solve the problem, and plan to check the calculation, writing, and methods used. Metacognition monitoring stage, the subject does not estimate the time needed to solve the problem, the subject is not sure that the plan to be done is correct because the subject is a bit forgotten, and the subject thinks that the method used to check the results of the solution is correct. Metacognition evaluation stage, the subject has no other way to understand the problem, the subject believes that the knowledge he has can help to solve the problem, the subject also re-examines the plan that has been used, and the subject has no other way to re-examine his work. Metacognition of subjects who have an innovative at the planning stage is reading and remembering to understand the problem, the subject plans to use the knowledge he has to solve it and estimate the time to complete, and the subject has a plan to check the calculation, writing and methods used. Metacognition at the monitoring stage, the subject sure that the method used to understand the problem, using a strategic plan to solve it as well as a way to double check his work was correct. Metacognition evaluation stage, the subject has no other way to understand the problem, the subject has an alternative strategy but the alternative is more complicated so it is not used, the subject examines the strategy it uses.
