Brantas River Water Quality Study Due to Waste Disposal in Malang City

Abstract


The Brantas River that flows in the Coban Talun area indicated that have no pollution while in the Kampung Warna-Warni and Bird Market indicated to have pollution by various types of waste, such as household and hospital waste. The purpose of this study was to determine the Brantas River's water quality in terms of physical aspects (temperature, changes in colour, smell, and taste in water), and chemicals (pH, and oxygen content), and biology (macrozoobenthic). This research used survey method, data collection was conducted by purposive sampling. The results showed that the quality of river water in Kampung Warna-Warni exceeded the quality standard. Brantas river water in the Kampung Warna-Warni and Bird Market polluted, shown by the physical aspects of turbid brown water, temperatures of 290C, smell and rancid taste, chemical aspects with average oxygen levels of 11.3, pH 8.3 and and found many Tubifex and freshwater crabs. Brantas River water in Coban Talun was classified as not polluted, as indicated by the physical aspects of clear, a temperature of 190C, odourless, and tasteless water. Chemical aspects with an average oxygen content of 24.5, pH 7.2 and and found macrozoobenthic Placoptera. The conclusions of this research were the Brantas River in the Kampung Warna-Warni and Bird Market classified as polluted while the Brantas River in Coban Talun was classified as not polluted.
