Challenges of Distance Learning for Teachers and Deaf Students During the Covid-19 Pandemic Period

Abstract


Distance learning is currently being intensively carried out as a form of educational process in the Covid-19 pandemic. Distance learning or distance education obviously has advantages and disadvantages. Nowadays distance learning can be delivered using various technologies namely the use of E-learning. But the problem in special schools with the existence of the Covid-19 pandemic educators must deliver learning without being accompanied by face-to-face. With a limited duration. This was done while responding to the challenges of learning in Era 4.0 that educators must have good digital literacy skills so that the learning process during the Covid-19 period could be passed well. The purpose of this study is to prepare educators with good digital literacy skills. Currently the problems encountered when doing distance learning using E-Learning (1) not all educators have communication tools such as laptops and cellphones with good quality, (2) educators do not have the ability to use technology properly, (3) educators have difficulty integrating the material provided with the learning design has been prepared, and (4) the network used is too weak. Problems also come from students and parents in distance learning, i.e. (1) parents do not understand the form of the assignment so that a lot of students do not do assignments for various reasons. (2) parents do not have time to study with their parents, because the learning hours of students are always different from their parents at home. (3) parents feel burdened, because the activities carried out by children must be controlled and accompanied. And (4) the costs used for E-learning also require considerable biays and free time. Deaf students feel the impact of distance learning, because the communication patterns of deaf children with distance learning will be more effective by holding a home visit once up to twice during one month. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research that is conducted to describe the phenomena that exist, but without giving treatment, alteration but only limited to describing a condition as it is. The results of this study, that the implementation of the distance learning process in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic period must continue to pay attention to the health protocols of educators and students with special needs and hearing impairments. The conclusion from the results of this study is that educators in any situation must be prepared to use technology to explore the learning process. Recommendations for educators, students and parents are expected to remain creative and always communicate about the conditions and the distance learning process.
