Improving of Students’ Scientific Asking Skills through the Implementation of a Questions Webs Based Learning Model

Abstract


Question Webs Based Learning (QWBL) model is a question webs based learning specifically designed to improve students' scientific asking skills. QWBL model has a syntax consisting of 5 phases, namely: 1) Identifying problems and conveying goals, 2) Delivering information and compiling questionnaires, 3) Discussing scientific questions, 4) Reflecting on scientific questions and 5) Evaluation. The purpose of this research is to improve students' scientific asking skills through the implementation of QWBL model. This research uses one group pre-test and post-test design on 20 students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh (Aceh, Indonesia), academic year 2017/2018. Student's scientific asking skills are measured using Scientific Asking Skills Assessment Sheet (SASAS) with indicators including: ask the questions, eliminate the questions, break down the questions, and make scientific questions. The data analysis technique uses Wilcoxon test and n-gain. The results of the research prove that: 1) The average post-test score of 3.42 (high category); 2) There is improvement of students' scientific asking skills at α = 5%; 3) Average score of n-gain students' scientific asking skills of .67 (medium category); and 4) Students responded very positively (95%) to the implementation of QWBL Model. Principle finding based on interview results is that students feel more courageous in scientific writing and can ask questions through writing. Therefore the QWBL model has proven to be effective for improving the scientific asking skills of senior high school students. The implication of this research is QWBL model is expected to be implemented to improve students' scientific inquiring skills in various education levels in Indonesia.
