Abstract

Classroom learning should not only transfer of knowledge but also transfer of values. Transfer of values should not only be subject tasks that are identical to character education such as civic education and religion education but the task of all subjects in school including mathematics. Character education should be contained in textbooks which are most widely used learning resources for students in schools because textbooks in classroom learning are essential for building student character (Komalasari & Sapriya, 2016).

This study aims to identify the values of character contained in the algebraic material in the textbooks of seventh-grade junior high school. The character values that become the reference are the character values developed in the K-13 curriculum are religious, honest, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, democratic, curiosity, spirit of nationality, homeland love, friendly/communicative, love peace, like to read, environmental care, social care, and responsibility.

This study employs qualitative approach with content analysis method. Researchers analyzed the character values presented in the algebraic material of seventh-grade junior high school textbooks by studying the narrative and illustrative forms used in the textbooks. There are three books selected in this research that are math textbooks semester one seventh-grade junior high school based curriculum K-13 that widely used in schools in Indonesia.

The results of the analysis are summarized in Table 1.

The results showed that the three books analyzed, there were only two books containing the character values into the algebraic material. The character values that have been found are religious, hard work, independent, curiosity, friendly/communicative, and social care.

The results of this study provide an illustration that mathematics textbooks based on the K-13 curriculum pay less attention to the character values developed in the curriculum. It is recommended for math teachers to arrange teaching materials that contain more character values so that math is not only a lesson that transfers knowledge but also transfers values so students can develop their own character more optimally.
